She is a resident of Norfolk, VA who has thirteen years of educational experience. She is a graduate of Norfolk State University with additional studies at Regent University and is currently employed at Maury High School teaching 11th grade students where Dr. Andrea Tottossy is the principal. Mrs. Smith believes that her duty is to pass on knowledge to others in such a way as to express her love of teaching. Children who feel and believe their teachers love them tend to be more receptive to learning whatever knowledge is imparted. Moreover, she believes that while the learning process must be rigorous, it also has to establish the types of relationships that prepare students to be life-long learners and workers. Essentially, Mrs. Smith views teaching as accepting new challenges daily, and meeting those challenges by willingly accepting the responsibility of overcoming barriers, and exhausting every opportunity to help students maximize their potential. Mrs. Smith is the 2008 “Teacher of the Year” for Norfolk Public Schools.
